2008 Quilt Show Invitational Exhibits

Art Quilt Exhibit and Lecture

This year ELIQG is featuring New York quilt artist Esterita Austin in the Suffolk Community College Lyceum Gallery during our annual quilt show, with an art quilt exhibit and lecture.  The use of textural and dimensional imagery has given Esterita's work unique style. She brings creative energy to all of her workshops and lectures, stimulating the imagination and invigorating the soul. Internationally award winning quilt maker, designer and teacher, Esterita Austin, studied for her MFA in graphics and photography at Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited in the American Museum of Folk Art in New York City. Esterita's quilt "The Well" was a prize winning piece in the museums international competition "Quilted Constructions: The Spirit of Design." Esterita has been a guest speaker at the museums lecture series "Artists Speak." Her award winning piece is featured in the American Museum of Folk Art magazine "Folk Art," Esterita’s work has been widely shown in International museums and galleries as well as published in magazines and books on fiber arts. As a female entrepreneur, Esterita was featured on The Sally Jesse Raphael Show and on "Simply Quilts" episode 1134. She has had an article on portraiture published in Quilting Arts magazine Jan/Feb 2007. Esterita was also written up in the "Threads" section of New York Newsday.

Lecture: Classic Rock  1 P.M. BOTH DAYS

Join Esterita for a humorous look at her journey from her beginning art experiences to the present. This power point/trunk show zips along as it illustrates how she grew the seed of a concept into bold design themes. The focus is on the power of value over color in constructing dramatic compositions. With her generously dispensed tips, you’ll be inspired to run back to your stash and fuse your own thread of an idea into a WOW fabric composition. Entrance is included in daily admission.

Special Exhibits

Member Challenge: New York Inspired Ballads, Broadway, Best Sellers and Blockbusters

Following the show theme of Celebrate New York, members were encouraged to make a quilt/wallhanging with sides at least 24", but no larger than a 30" square, that is inspired by a well-known song, show, book or movie with a New York themed title. These quilts will be exhibited at our 2008 show.

I Love New York Block Challenge

Members and non-members are invited to join in a block challenge based on a New York theme. The block must finish at 12-1/2" square, you must use the colors blue and or orange, but are not limited to only these colors. The block can be pieced or appliquéd or a combination of both. It may be embellished but NOT quilted. The block as well as an entry fee of $2.00 must be received by May 1, 2008. All the blocks received on time will be judged and winning blocks will be assembled into a quilt top to be raffled among the makers. These blocks will be exhibited at our show.

Member Purse Contest II

In 1995 member Ethel Grigonis challenged our members to make a purse, no larger than 14" X 14" to be judged by our 1995 quilt show viewers. In 2008 we challenged members to design a purse to be judged by your fellow members at our May general meeting and to be displayed at our quilt show. The purse must have a theme and a title to describe it’s theme, be no smaller than 3"X5" and no larger than 20"X20". These purses will be exhibited at our show.

Quilter Treasure Bright Ideas Invitational Exhibit

Quilters Treasure of Rindge, NH shares their 4th annual fabric challenge from 2007 "Bright Ideas" with us. Come see the results!

Guiding Light Special Exhibit

ELIQG remembers three members who passed away this year: Margot Hickling, Helen Sulzinski and Aiku Fujita. We will miss their kind spirits and guiding light.

Demonstrations

Various quiltmaking techniques will be demonstrated throughout each day.

Entrance is included in daily admission.
